The number of children in foster care has risen every year since 2012, and the opioid crisis has only magnified the problem due to addiction-related neglect.

Despite this, the fostering efforts in the US have helped to increase the number of children being adopted out of foster care, and driven down the number of children who age out of foster care without a support system in place.
